De Vlaams-Marokkaanse danser/choreograaf Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui behoort al jaren tot de absolute wereldtop en werd in 2011 voor de tweede keer uitgeroepen tot 'choreograaf van het jaar' door het invloedrijke magazine Tanz. Julidans volgde zijn artistieke parcours al die jaren op de voet. Sutra, zijn samenwerking met Chinese Shaolinmonniken, was één van de hoogtepunten van Julidans 2009, net als Dunas een jaar later.

Voor zijn nieuwe dansvoorstelling TeZukA richtte Cherkaoui zijn blik op het fascinerende universum van de Japanse striptekenaar Osamu Tezuka, 'de god van de manga'. De choreograaf liet zich niet alleen beïnvloeden door Tezuka's stijl, maar ook door zijn thema's. Als kind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog droeg Tezuka mensenrechten en tolerantie hoog in het vaandel. Astro Boy, het robotje met het gouden hart, is één van zijn bekendste personages en speelt ook in de voorstelling een sleutelrol.

Op het toneel brengen zowel dansers als kalligrafen Tezuka's wereld tot leven. Op de achtergrond enorme projecties van tekeningen, op de voorgrond de dansers als mangapersonages. "Niet alleen die voortdurende switch tussen werelden, maar ook de combinatie van dans, projecties, tekst, decor en muziek maken van de voorstelling een wervelend geheel." (Knack)

After the great success of Sutra at Julidans 2009 and Dunas one year later, the world-famous Belgian-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui will be back at Julidans with TeZuKa, his tribute to the Japanese manga artist Osamu Tezuka - regarded by many as the 'god of manga'.

"It is an honour, a pleasure and a blessing to have his world merge with mine. ", says Cherkaoui. The world of this visionary Japanese cartoonist - a fascinating mix of tradition, science fiction and contemporary reality - provides the material for Cherkaoui's new dance production. In TeZuka the choreographer returns to his first love, drawing. But the master of the manga (Japanese comics and print cartoons) influenced the choreographer on a more than purely formal level. Having grown up in post-war Japan, Osamu Tezuka ignored taboos and treated universal themes, setting great store by human rights, ethics and tolerance.

In TeZuka, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui visualizes the artistic process: he has both dancers and calligraphers describe the drawing process on stage, from an empty page through a single Japanese kanji (letter) to a fully developed manga character.
